Embedded Files
Creating a new file involves:
- opening up an application (or program) to create the file with
- creating the contents of the file
- choosing where to save the file
The first two should be fairly self-explanatory; the type of file you are creating will dictate which application you use, and creating the content is up to you! However, when you save a file for the first time, following these steps should ensure that you can find your file again:
- The first time you save, you can either choose Save or Save As—both will bring up the Save window:
- (Note that this example is using LibreOffice Writer, but the principle is the same for any new document.)
- Seeing that the name “Untitled 1” is highlighted, simply type the name for the file.
- Choose where you would like to save the file—start by using the bookmarks on the left, then navigate to where you would like to store the file. Here I’ve click first on the Documents bookmark, then opened the School folder inside that folder:
- Note that the breadcrumb trail across the top is exactly the same concept as the File Manager, as is the Create Folder button on the top-right.
- When you are in the right place, simply click the Save button in the bottom-right of the window, and the file will be created.
Once you have created the file, simply pressing Ctrl-S (or going the File menu and choosing Save) will update the saved file on disk.
